My Life Values
(in no specific order)
Curiosity & Amateur Mindset
I believe curiosity is the most important trait someone can possess throughout their life. As we age and quit having new experiences as often and gain a better understanding of the world around us, we settle into comfort of our knowledge and understanding. Being vigilant about staying curious and wondering how things work ensures that we have a life full of learning and keeps our inner fire alive.
The amateur mindset goes hand-in-hand with this. By removing our ego and allowing our curiosity to flourish, no matter how silly it seems, and taking the beginners mindset (even in areas where we are experienced) allows us to gain new insights and push past the barriers we create for ourselves.
Gratitude
Gratitude is this amazing thing that costs nothing, and makes everyone involved feel better. At my house before eating a group meal we always say what we are grateful for, and it is a great daily practice that makes us all be present in the moment and thankful for what we have, and helps us to not sweat the small stuff. Gratitude is contagious and if you let it infect your circle, it will bring happiness, connection, and even enhances neuroplasticity in the brain.
Change & Pushing Comfort Zones
A life without growth is a sad prospect to me. Mark Manson states "If you don't look back at yourself and cringe, you haven't grown" and I like to make sure I'm cringing at my past experience all the time. By becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable and trying new things that push us to the limit we are enabled to grow and add new mental models and frameworks to all aspects of our lives.
Maximum Effort & Concentrated Focus
Exerting maximum effort on a specific task and dedicating your entire focus to it brings forth faster learning, more fulfillment, and gratification in the work you do. When I am learning a new skill, drilling an old skill, or working on a project, I find putting in my full effort takes me into a flow state more reliably than anything else.
Hyper Responsibility
"Just because it's not your fault doesn't mean it's not your responsibility" - Terry Pratchett
The Stoics are famous for their ideals around taking control by placing responsibility on themselves for things others typically wouldn't.
I have found this tactic fantastic for getting sh*t done.
Play
We are hardwired for play. Our education systems and occupational expectations from the Industrial Revolution have tried to beat play out of us.
I know for myself, my most productive periods of life in work, relationships, and community have come from the energy I gained from playing really hard. I always prioritize play and make sure I give myself the space to exert, experiment, learn, and laugh as it has tremendous impact on every other facet of my life.
Contrast
While at design school in 2014, we learned about C.R.A.P. (contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity). It made so much sense and instantly cleaned up so much of my work. It was a great filter for quickly creating better design. Little did I know how much I would come to find in life that contrast is universally one of the most important things.
In your speech, contrast keeps you from being monotone. Going to a concert one day, then spending the next in nature just with the sounds of the birds and the wind in the trees elevates the experience even more. Having a big push on a project, then backing off and reflecting on the experience, knowledge and insights are gained that would otherwise be missed. Couple dancing, slow smooth movements, followed by sharp quick movements adds texture and interest to the art.
For me, the pinnacle of experience, speedflying is the ultimate contrast. Getting to the trailhead at 4 am (contrast in awake time), slogging up the 40 degree slope (intense) in the quiet before the birds are chirping (peaceful), watching the sunrise (soft focus) while setting up my parachute (intense focus). Then taking in the sunrise with slow calm breathing before barreling off the mountain in a full sprint, pupils constricting, being in pure flow state for 2 minutes, buzzing 3 feet off the ground dodging rocks and trees at 70mph, then landing, back in the still quiet air. Norepinephrine and dopamine surging through my body and brain while all around is the calm golden glow of the quiet morning.
Taking this concept and finding ways to apply it in my work, lifestyle, and daily experience of existence has proven to be a great promoter of quality of life, the pursuit of excellence, and increased enjoyment of the big and small things.
